Trail Monkeys Day Rides

Despite the wind & rain a few of us headed out for a few hours on the hills today.

Jamie & Norm headed to Edale cafe via various trails.

Nina & crew headed through the Cement Works to Hope, along Edale road for a bit then turned off to head up the long climb onto Winhill & Hope Cross - still climbing we headed towards the discreet pile of stones and turned downwards to get our rewards.

The downhill to Aston was as good as ever, we then headed to the Woodbine Cafe for a hot chocolate.

We then headed home again via the cement works.

Well done to everyone, we hope you can make the next one for more of the same.

Some photos from our recent Trail Monkeys Lake District MTB weekend...

This weekend saw a great turn-out with 17 of us pitching up.

The weather was perfect so we embarked on an epic cross country ride which had been in the planning for some time.

We could only go ahead if the conditions were perfect due to the exposed nature of these hills.

Thankfully the sun shone and of we set off. First up was Kirkstone Pass, then onto the mammoth ascent onto High Street taking us upto over 800m above sea level, as you can imagine there was quite a bit of pushing!

Having reached the summit it was time for our reward - miles & miles of superb natural moorland tracks.

Finally we descended to Pooley Bridge & someone suggested a ferry ride back to Patterdale...

A few beers were enjoyed on the hour long ferry trip back.

What a day, only around 25 miles in total but it felt like much more!

We are now planning another epic ride, this time in the Yorkshire Dales over the weekend of 6th to 8th August '10.

Trail Monkeys Mountain Biking Day Rides

As part of our Trail Monkey Mountain Biking Events we are running day rides from our shop in Bradwell on the following dates:

· Sunday 18th July
· Sunday 1st August
· Sunday 15th August

On each of the above Sunday’s, we will be leading two mountain bike rides starting from Trail Monkeys.

All adults are welcome.

One ride will be ideal for beginners, & those wishing to improve their fitness & mountain biking skills.

The other ride will be a little more challenging, ideal for those a bit fitter and with a bit more experience!

Starting at 10.30 & returning at around 4pm, with a lunch stop at a café or pub.

Hire Bikes are available at the reduced price of £20 for the day.

My trip to Buffalo Systems.

It is always interesting to meet suppliers on their own turf, so when Buffalo offered a trip to their place, I was more than happy to go along.

Buffalo clothing is made in Sheffield, just half an hour drive from here and as I am already a keen Buffalo wearer I was very excited to see where my Buffalo is made.

I was taken through the range of Buffalo garments meeting not only the favourites- Mountain Shirt and Special 6 but also some of the garments I wasn’t as familiar with including the Teclite Cycle Shirt which is lightweight and will scrunch into a rucksack also the Belay Jacket which is perfect for cold weather.

Risky Cycling Rarely to Blame for Bike Accidents, Study Finds

I spotted this interesting article over at The Guardian, and thought it worth posting here.

"A tiny proportion of accidents involving cyclists are caused by riders jumping red lights or stop signs, or failing to wear high-visibility clothing and use lights, a government-commissioned study has discovered.

The findings appear to contradict a spate of recent reports speculating that risky behaviour by riders, such as listening to music players while cycling, could be behind a near 20% rise in cyclist deaths and serious injuries in the second quarter of this year.

The study, carried out for the Department for Transport, found that in 2% of cases where cyclists were seriously injured in collisions with other road users police said that the rider disobeying a stop sign or traffic light was a likely contributing factor. Wearing dark clothing at night was seen as a potential cause in about 2.5% of cases, and failure to use lights was mentioned 2% of the time.

The figures were slightly higher when the cyclist was killed, but in such cases only the driver's account is available.

The data, which was analysed by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), showed that more than a quarter of all cycling deaths in 2005-07 happened when a vehicle ran into the rear of a bike. This rose to more than one-third in rural areas and to 40% in collisions that took place away from junctions.

The 64-page analysis found that police attributed responsibility for collisions more or less evenly between drivers and cyclists overall, but this was skewed by the fact that when child riders were involved their behaviour was named as a primary factor more than three-quarters of the time.

With adult cyclists, police found the driver solely responsible in about 60%-75% of all cases, and riders solely at fault 17%-25% of the time.

The cyclists' lobby group CTC said the report showed that the government needed to focus more on driver behaviour rather than on issues such as cyclists wearing helmets. The TRL published a separate DfT-commissioned report today in which it was estimated that the universal use of helmets could save between 10 and 15 lives a year, a conclusion disputed by the CTC.

"The main cause of crashes seems to be 'failed to look properly', whereas very few cyclists are injured or killed acting illegally, such as failing to use lights at night or disobeying traffic signals," said Chris Peck, from the lobby group.

"We believe this report strongly supports our view that the biggest problem for cyclists is bad driving. With that in mind we are greatly concerned that the government still seems fascinated with analysing and promoting cycle helmets, the value of which appears to be inconclusive. We believe that the government should now focus on tackling the causes of injury which appears to be mainly inconsiderate and dangerous driving. Reduced speed limits, stronger traffic law enforcement and cycle-friendly road design are the solutions."

TRL recommended that more research be carried out into the relatively high numbers of young casualties, finding that those aged 10 to 15 were most at risk of injury for each mile cycled. Riders aged 16 to 29 were more likely to suffer harm than any other adult group.

The data – which covered incidents on the highways – showed that 3% of all collisions leading to deaths or serious injuries took place on bike lanes, and almost 80% of casualties happened during daylight hours. Just over 15% of all such accidents involved the cyclist alone."

Tempted as we are to snuggle up and hibernate during the winter months we know that really we should be getting kitted up and braving the elements for a blast on our bikes. Dark & White Enduro Ride

It was a busy weekend for us at Hike Bike & Ride!

Jamie was away with a few of the Trail Monkey's crew on a lads only mountain biking weekend in Ambleside...where much beer was drunk & much biking done!

Friday & Sunday were spent on the 'slippy when wet' Altura Trail, then after a heavy night on the beer they cranked up 30 miles on Saturday, lapping up a few of the nearby gruelling hills, some slippery Northshore at Grisedale and a superb XC ride back to Ambleside YHA for yet more beer. Friday must have been good as they returned for more of the same on Sunday.

Hike Bike and Ride & The Bike Station, Hathersage helped out with some prizes for The Dark & White's Enduro cycling event at Sherwood Pines, Nottingham.

Amanda, Roger & Nina took part, needless-to-say our legs have just about recovered! (it's Thursday!)

Some great prizes were presented to the winners of each catergory...our favourites included the Dakine Session Backpacks, Bike Tools, Sigma Cycle Lights.

James, our mechanic then hooked up for some downhill mountain biking at Ambergate on Sunday.

As you can imagine, Monday morning was pretty quiet, with loads of cups of tea & cake, as we set about processing the weekends orders...

Cycling Through Autumn

This autumn has been wonderful; Here at Hike Bike and Ride we have enjoyed some great rides in the lakes, Scotland and of course in our own Peak District. From trail centres and cross country rides to our commute to work we have had great fun riding our bikes and are planning some super weekends through the next few months.

As winter approaches our minds turn to our cycle kit not only for the commute to work but also for our mountain biking excitement. New gloves are on the cards for me this year and I am tempted by the new Merino Wool Arm Warmers from Endura.

At the moment my combination for the commute is an Endura Merino Wool Base Layer, Ronhill Bikester DXB and a windproof jacket. I top it off with a Buff to keep my ears warm under my helmet and a comfy pair of Teko Merino Wool Socks. My friend on the other hand opts for bib tights & a windproof jacket for his commute through Chatsworth to Matlock.

There is nothing like bike riding on a cold fresh day in winter to get your senses going and beat the winter blues. Even a wet ride gives you a buzz and leaves you with that glow of satisfaction that you have conquered the elements and got out there.

West Country Way – Plymouth to Minehead

Saturday 11th to Tuesday 14th September 2010

This epic mountain biking holiday, takes us from Plymouth to Minehead, via the best trails we can find!

· Setting off at 10am from Plymouth Hoe on Saturday 11th, we will take in the spectacular scenery of Dartmoor & Exmoor National Parks.

· We plan to ride as a group, and recommend riders are of an intermediate cross country level, to get the most out of this trip.

· Each day will be around 35 miles of superb cross country riding!

· 4 days guided mountain biking

· 4 nights B&B accommodation

9th Hope Valley Mountain Bike Challenge - 26th September 2009

9th Hope Valley Mountain Bike Challenge

Returning by popular demand the 9th Hope Valley Mountain Bike Challenge takes place on Saturday 26th September 2009. For those brave enough to take up the challenge it offers a choice of two off-road routes of approx 20 and 38 miles around the Hope Valley.

For experienced riders the route is technical and takes you via Jaggers Clough, Edale and Jacobs Ladder to Hayfield returning via Rushup Edge and takes in Hollins Cross (Mam Tor) on the way back.

For a shorter day you can return from Edale still taking in some of the most beautiful scenery in the Peak District. As in previous years great refreshments will be available at 3 main check-points along the route together with hot soup at the finish. It has been said that due to the amount of free cake and refreshments available en-route you can actually gain weight – despite the hugely strenuous challenge!

“It was probably one of the most varied and technical courses I have completed” and “I enjoyed the challenge and the refreshments kept me going – thank you for organising such a fantastic day” were some of the comments after the challenge in 2008.

Registration and car parking will take place at Hope Valley College. The start will remain the same, from Shatton, and the finish will be back at Hope Valley College. Advance registration is advisable – it will ensure your participation as well as assisting with organisation and catering.

The event is organised voluntarily by Hope Valley College and Hathersage school parents with all proceeds going to improving facilities for the children - last year over £1,500 was raised!
